1bar text alerts
1bar is a web app for hiking and camping with little or no cell service. Its 1bar trip updates & safety alerts program sends text messages from (855) 573-8556.
1bar is run by David Cahill, an individual (sole proprietor) in Lake Stevens, Washington. Contact: david.cahill@gmail.com.
Who gets texts, and why
Someone using 1bar can leave a trip plan (where they’re going and when they’ll be back) and choose emergency contacts — usually close family and friends. Those contacts can get the trip updates the traveller turns on: when a trip is planned and when they head out, their check-ins and where they are, when they reach their destination or change plans, and when they’re back safe. If the traveller doesn’t return by their time, or asks for help in the app, 1bar texts those contacts the plan and the last known location. Each message links to a private trip page with a map of the check-ins. Travellers can also text 1bar to check in when they have no data, and can choose to get their own check-in reminders by text.
How you opt in
When someone adds you as a contact, 1bar sends one text explaining this and asking you to reply YES. You get texts only after you reply YES; if you don’t, nothing else is sent. The app asks travellers to add only people who have agreed to be their emergency contact. Travellers who turn on text reminders for themselves get the same YES request on their own phone first.
How often
Contacts: during a trip, usually a few texts a day — the updates the traveller turned on, plus alerts if they’re late or ask for help. No texts at night (the traveller’s quiet hours, 9:30 PM to 7 AM by default; a traveller can change or turn them off) except alerts. Reply LESS to get only the important ones (leaving, back safe, running late, help), ALL for every update again. Travellers with reminders on: a few texts per trip (each planned check-in, and when they’re due back). Message and data rates may apply.
Stopping and help
Reply STOP at any time to opt out, or HELP for help. You can also ask the person who added you to remove you.
Privacy
Phone numbers are used only to send these trip updates and safety messages, and are never sold or used for marketing. Twilio delivers the texts. A traveller’s own number goes only to the contacts they chose, in their trip messages and on the private trip page, so they can call them. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. See the privacy policy.
The texts, word for word
The opt-in request a new contact gets (their name and the traveller’s filled in):
1bar trip updates & safety alerts: Hi Sam, Alex added you as an emergency contact. Reply YES to get their trip updates (leaving, check-ins, back safe) and alerts if they're overdue or need help, usually a few texts per trip day. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.
After they reply YES:
1bar trip updates & safety alerts: Thanks — you'll get trip updates from Alex, and a text if they're overdue or need help (reply LESS for only the important ones). Usually a few texts per trip day. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.
A traveller who turns on text reminders for themselves gets:
1bar trip updates & safety alerts: Reply YES to get your own trip check-in reminders by text (a few per trip). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.
Reply HELP (or INFO) at any time:
1bar trip updates & safety alerts: trip check-in reminders for travellers, and trip updates and overdue alerts for the emergency contacts they chose. Help: david.cahill@gmail.com or https://1bar.online/sms. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply LESS for only the important ones, STOP to opt out.
Reply STOP (or END, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, QUIT) and no more texts are sent; the carrier’s standard opt-out confirmation is the last message. Reply START to opt back in.
