1bar is a web service for browsing and trip safety where there is little or no cell signal. It is run by a sole proprietor (named above) and has no advertising.
What 1bar keeps
- Your account: username, a hashed password, two-factor settings and the devices you sign in on; the name, email address and mobile number you give for trips and reminders, and whether you opted in to texts.
- Browsing: pages you open are loaded by 1bar's server-side browser, which keeps your sites' cookies in your own profile; your bookmarks; and a history of pages you open (kept 90 days, and you can clear it any time).
- Trips: trip plans, check-ins, and the locations your phone sends during a trip; reminders you set.
- Trip pages: each contact on a trip gets a private link to a page with the plan, the check-ins and a map of where you were headed and last seen. Only people with the link can open it, and a week after the trip it stops showing places.
- Contacts: the names, email addresses and mobile numbers you add as emergency contacts, whether each has opted in to texts, and a log of messages sent.
How it's used
Only to provide 1bar: loading pages for you, saving them for offline use, and sending the reminders, trip updates and alerts you set up — to you and the contacts you chose. Nothing is sold, rented or used for marketing or advertising. Administrators can manage accounts but cannot see anyone's pages, cookies, history or trips.
Text messages
Mobile numbers are used only to send the trip updates and safety messages described on the text alerts page. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text-messaging opt-in data and consent are never shared with any third party.
Services that help deliver it
Emails are sent through Resend and texts through Twilio, which receive only the message and the address or number it goes to. To show weather, maps and nearby ranger stations, 1bar sends coordinates (never your name) to public data services such as the National Weather Service, the US Geological Survey, OpenStreetMap and Open-Meteo.
Keeping and deleting
History is deleted after 90 days. To delete your account and everything with it, email david.cahill@gmail.com; contacts can reply STOP to texts or use the link in any 1bar email to stop messages.
